Statistics

Susan has a keen interest in medical issues and specifically the functions of the human body. She is concerned with the adverse impact on quality of life brought about by bad nutrition and life stresses.

She says, "Our country cannot go forward without improved nutrition to sustain life, so that we all can offer a service to our communities."

"I was born in the small town of Thabazimbi, lived there until my first year of school, when we relocated to the farm community which is known today as the Limpopo area North/West of Potgietersrust, close to the actual Limpopo river.
"My father worked on several farms for a wealthy farmer who supplied diverse products to the markets and also experimented with various cultures. On the one hand he had cattle for producing meat and others to supply milk products. This is also where I learned to love the Bushveld and developed a passion for preserving our natural resources.
"It was not an easy life for us because money was short and we had a family of 7 to support: father, mother, three girls and two boys (I am the middle child).
"Naturally, living on a farm, children stay in hostels closest to the family home. This in particular was difficult for me as we could only go home 2 weekends during a term and during school holidays.
"Opportunities to grow were next to zero due to the shortage of cash and clothing was even worse. We had to make do with hand-me-downs from some of the neighbouring friends.
"So, life itself was not sympathetic to us as a family and I understand how many of the under-privileged people of South Africa feel, because I was there. I also know what the lack of nutrition can do to your total well-being.
"I had to work very hard in my life to build my knowledge enough to earn a living. I also had to build my character over the years because during my youth I was denied the opportunities.
"We live in a country with very wealthy citizens, but they do not really care what happens to the person who cannot afford the luxury of study, a place to stay or be able to eat healthy meals on a regular basis.
"Fortunately, I am a very strong-willed person and can look back at those times without feeling negative. I would like to see people of all walks of life, having those opportunities I never had.
"I wish to make a difference and be an example to others.
"I would like to see people like that, to stand up for themselves, and for us to get some things in our country streamlined, getting people educated in issues like nutrition and conservation, and have South Africa open opportunities for all, not just the already wealthy ones.
"In this way we will have a strong and stable population."
